Purdue Basketball Tickets – Without Hummel, Boilers Take A Plunge
Purdue University’s men’s basketball team took a turn for the worse heading into the final stretch of the regular season in what Indianapolis Star sports columnist Bob Kravitz summed up in a five-word description: “a shame, a damned shame.” The unfortunate incident he’s referring to is, of course, the fact that Purdue’s star player Robbie Hummel will be sitting the sidelines for the rest of the season, all but dashing the Boilermakers’ shot at a national title.
Hummel brought gasps to the basketball court after landing wrong on a 12-foot jump shot toward the end of Purdue’s Feb. 24 game at Minnesota, tearing his ACL and putting an immediate stop to the rest of his junior season. Purdue instantly took a nosedive down the NCAA polls despite the final win against the Gophers, and the decline worsened on Feb. 28, when Michigan State snapped the Boilers’ 10-game winning streak.
With E’Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson missing the third piece of their extremely powerful tripod, there was just something missing on the court despite Purdue’s hustle in the Feb. 28 game against the Spartans. Seniors Chris Kramer and Keaton Grant stepped up to help aid the team effort of filling Hummel’s gap on the basketball court, but after a solid first-half run the Boilermakers proved no match for Michigan State’s much bigger rebounding and offense, slipping to a 53-44 loss.
Purdue’s Mackey Arena was introduced to LWH (Life Without Hummel) on Feb. 28, and the results were less than dazzling. Johnson and Moore had trouble getting inside the paint and Kramer lost the ball about as many times as he got a steal, with Robbie Hummel looking on from the bench as his team ran out of steam. The Boilermakers were ultimately not strong enough to ward off Raymar Morgan and Kalin Lucas, and now they’ve sacrificed that hard-fought No. 3 national ranking going into the final week of playtime before the Big Ten Tournament commences.
Despite Hummel’s absence for the rest of the season, Purdue is still a good basketball team – but do good basketball teams win national titles? Hardly. What could have been Purdue’s golden year has turned awry, but in the meantime the NCAA Tournament is just getting started, meaning the Boilermakers can come back from a very close loss to the Spartans and still give the big dance their best jig.
Illinois basketball coach Bruce Weber told ESPN not to count Purdue out just yet when it comes to the Big Ten, saying, “They can still win the Big Ten championship. It’s definitely within reach, and that’s what he’s [Matt Painter] got to focus on right now.”
Indeed, this isn’t the first time Robbie Hummel has gone MIA on the basketball court. Last season, Hummel fought to recover from a broken bone in his back for much of the season, and the Boilermakers still posted a solid run in the NCAA Tournament. This year, Purdue’s basketball team is enduring yet another Hummel-induced setback, but Purdue basketball fans are still ready to cheer on the black and gold through the tourney, hopeful for the team to focus on what (or who) is on the court and not getting distracted by that which is absent.
Basketball fans are snapping up Purdue basketball tickets from StubHub to games the rest of this season, and even with Matt Painter’s Boilermakers falling to the No. 6 spot in the polls to start off the month of March, Purdue fans will still ‘Boiler Up’ going into March Madness – and for the record, the madness has already begun.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Purdue basketball 2013 recruit Derek Willis’ commitment to Purdue may be ending sometime in the near future.
His high school coach, Troy Barr, said Thursday Willis indicated to him that he’s withdrawing the commitment he made to Purdue in the spring.
“It’s something he kind of hit me with today,” Barr said, “but it’s apparently been on his mind for some time from what he told me.”
However, Willis’ father, Del, believes at this time no decision has been made.
“Nothing’s changed as of yet. He’s had a little bit of second thoughts, but nothing’s changed and I don’t know if it will. We’re going to sit down here the next couple days and really talk this out, the pros and cons of everything,” said Del Willis.
The skilled 6-foot–9 forward from Kentucky committed to Purdue immediately after being offered in the spring, then saw his stock sky-rocket weeks later on the AAU circuit to where he’s considered a top 30-40 prospect nationally in the 2013 class.

PRAGUE, Czech Republic –

The Purdue women’s basketball team arrived safely in Prague, Czech Republic, on Saturday morning, right on time but a bit sleep deprived. The Boilermakers and their entourage departed West Lafayette, Ind., on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. and due to the trans-Atlantic flight and a six hour time difference, arrived at the Prague airport approximately 9:15 a.m. CEST.
Friday was Antionette Howard’s birthday and her teammates greeted her at the bus with party hats, since it was a bit early in the morning for cake.
Friday’s bus ride to Chicago’s O’Hare airport was an uneventful one and included watching the movie Soul Surfer, the inspirational story of surfer Bethany Hamilton’s comeback after losing an arm in a shark attack. Things got a little more interesting from there. Head coach Sharon Versyp, assistant coach Nadine Morgan and supervisor of operations Terry Kix were having lunch at the O’Hare airport when they noticed smoke coming out of an airplane on the tarmac and passengers and crew using the evacuation slides and running from the plane. Several fire trucks and emergency vehicles were still on the tarmac when the flight carrying the Boilermakers departed.
The flight from O’Hare to Frankfurt, Germany, lasted a little over eight hours, but there were plenty of in-flight entertainment options and meals to keep the group occupied. There was not much sleep to be had, but a quick turnaround in Frankfurt and a 45-minute flight to Prague kept everyone alert and eager to begin experiencing Europe.
In Prague, the group gathered its luggage and breezed through customs, where it was greeted by Basketball Travelers’ hosts, Johnny and Jane Lokaj, who are from Slovakia. A charter bus was waiting and the Boilermakers were treated to a bus tour of Prague between the airport and the hotel, which is located in the heart of the city. Jane has been studying in Prague and she provided an informative narrative filled with historical information about the city and country. Johnny was able to impart practical information on local customs and tips.
The group then checked into the hotel and had time to shower and get settled before setting out for Old Town Square for some sightseeing and lunch. The weather was overcast and threatened rain upon arrival in Prague, but by the time the group re-emerged from the hotel, the weather had turned warm and sunny.
With Jane leading the way, the student-athletes checked out the square and then headed to a mall for some shopping. The rest of the group split up to explore the area and get some much-needed exercise after long hours of sitting.
The evening was capped off by dinner at Taverna Toscana, the oldest Italian restaurant in Prague. The Boilermakers were led to a private dining room in the lower level which featured a grotto style with large rough-cut stone walls and decorations resembling the look of homes in Tuscany.
The team ate well and had more energy than most of the adults in the group, but by the end of a delicious, but leisurely meal, everyone was ready to head back to the hotel to catch up on some much-needed rest.
On the agenda for tomorrow is a boat tour of the Vltava River, some free time for sightseeing before departing for a contest against Slovanka at 5:30 p.m. Check back to purduesports.com for a game recap on Sunday, followed by a blog by junior Sam Ostarello on Monday.

TALLINN, Estonia –
Purdue rising redshirt freshman guard Anthony Johnson and the East Coast All-Stars erased a 15-point deficit in the final three minutes of regulation on Friday to defeat Sweden, 78-77, in Four Nations Cup action.
Johnson played a central role in ECA’s comeback, draining a three-point field goal to narrow the deficit to five points with just over a minute left on the clock. With ECA’s full-court press harassing Sweden into turnovers down the stretch, Brandon Triche scored seven points in a row to put ECA up, 76-74, with 15 seconds to play.
Sweden banked in a three-point field goal from the top of the key to take a 77-76 lead with six seconds left in regulation, forcing the East Coast All-Stars into a timeout.

Johnson finished the night with eight points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
